Q. Do you need proof of identification (ID) to vote in North Carolina?
A. In 2018, a new North Carolina constitutional amendment was passed requiring voters to show proof of ID when appearing at a polling place to vote. The North Carolina General Assembly passed a law later that year implementing this new requirement.
Q. I heard that the voter ID requirement has been delayed until 2020. Do you need an ID to vote in elections to be held in 2019?
A. No. Earlier this year, the North Carolina General Assembly delayed implementation of the proof of ID to vote requirement until 2020.
Q. Can UNC Asheville student and employees IDs now be used as proof of ID for voting purposes?
A. Yes. As part of the 2018 law passed to implement the proof of ID to vote requirement, colleges and universities in North Carolina could apply to have its student and employee ID cards approved for this purpose. UNC Asheville is currently one of only five UNC System schools whose student and employee IDs have been approved as acceptable forms of ID for voting purposes. Our student and employee IDs were approved for this purpose on March 15, 2019 by the North Carolina State Board of Elections.
Q. Does having a UNC Asheville student or employee ID mean that I am eligible to vote in North Carolina?
A. No. The North Carolina State Board of Elections administers North Carolina’s voter eligibility laws, through each county’s local board of elections. Because voting eligibility laws can be complex and confusing, UNC Asheville recommends contacting the North Carolina State Board of Elections or your local county board of elections for more information on this topic. Contact information for the North Carolina Board of Elections and local boards of elections can be found on this website: https://www.ncsbe.gov/contact-us.
Q. Does UNC Asheville do anything differently when issuing student or employees ID now that the IDs are an approved form of ID for voting purposes?
A. No. UNC Asheville’s rules for issuing student and employee ID have not changed.
Q. Does UNC Asheville confirm nationality or citizenship status when issuing student and employee IDs?
A: No. UNC Asheville is only required to confirm a person’s identity in order to issue that person a student or employee ID card. This has always been part of UNC Asheville’s process to issue a student or employee ID. UNC Asheville does not inquire about or confirm nationality or citizenship status when issuing photo IDs to students and employees.
